Message from the President

Welcome to the Junior League of Jackson!  On behalf of our more than 2,400 members, I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our work to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  Through our members’ commitment to community projects and to our fund development businesses, this year the League will donate more than 53,000 volunteer hours valued at over $797,000.  And our donation is not just in volunteer hours; our fund development businesses last year generated more than $1 million in direct financial support for the League and its 2014-2015 community projects in metro Jackson.

As one of Mississippi’s largest non-profit volunteer organizations, and the seventh-largest Junior League in the world, we touch the lives of countless children and young people through our community projects.  The best-known may be our signature projects, the Children’s Cancer Clinic at Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children and the Mississippi Children’s Museum.  But we are also proud to partner with dozens of other organizations for projects large and small.  Over 900 Active and Provisional members work in more than 30 community projects, centered on early literacy, teen pregnancy prevention, nutrition, physical activity, and social/emotional wellness.  Explore the rich variety of these projects and partnerships on our “In the Community” page.  If you are interested in proposing a project that can put our volunteers and funds to work, we’d love to hear from you!

Our projects rely on the commitment of our partners and our members (including more than 1,500 Sustaining members, who continue to give valuable time and money to the League and who lead dozens of other community organizations).  Financial support for our projects comes from our volunteer-operated fund development businesses.  JLJ Publications is the author of our celebrated children’s book, The Year of the Stars, and our award-winning cookbooks, Southern Sideboards and Come On In!, both of which will be available for the first time digitally in Fall 2014!  Our volunteers also plan and execute three amazing events each year earning vital funds to sustain our mission while creating timeless moments for families to experience. We invite you to join us for Mistletoe Marketplace (our largest fund development business and the South’s premier holiday shopping experience), November 5 – 8, 2014 at the MS Trade Mart; Touch A Truck® Jackson (a hands-on event that gives the children in our area an up-close-and-personal experience while exploring, touching and learning about emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and trucks of all types) scheduled for April 24-25, 2015 at the Mississippi Fairgrounds; and be on the lookout for more information on our newest fund development/community project, the Junior League Jumble, an upscale rummage sale, February 19 – 21, 2015.

The Junior League of Jackson is among the most effective agents for positive change in our community.  And while that community improvement is at the heart of our mission, no less important are the training, skills and knowledge that every member gains as a part of this organization.  I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this group of amazing women this year, and I hope that if you’re interested in being a part of what the Junior League does – whether as a member, a project partner, a corporate sponsor or a friend – you’ll let us know.  Thank you for visiting; please let us hear from you!

All the best,

Mary Largent Purvis, 2014-2015 President
