The 2016-2017 Provisional Class of the Junior League of Jackson is comprised of dynamic and talented women who are committed to making a positive impact on our community. The dedication and excitement that these ladies have demonstrated ensures a healthy and vibrant future for the Junior League of Jackson.
- Habitat for Humanity Home (July-August)
Provisional and Active members are teamed up with Women Build to make the dream of home ownership a reality for a deserving family by building a new home.
- Arts Explosion Camp (June)
Provisional members head back to summer camp by partnering with Calvary Baptist Church to provide a weeklong summer arts camp for local elementary school children. While participating in the camp, each camper will enjoy daily art, karate and dance classes, along with an enrichment activity, such as a visit from the “Reptile Man” and playing flutes alongside a pipe organist.
- Stewpot’s Lunch-n-Learn (June-July)
Provisional members serve up fun lunches for children participating in Stewpot’s summer program while teaching them about the importance of healthy eating and exercise.
- Backpack Buddies (June-July)
Provisional members get ready to kick off a successful new school year by filling backpacks with school supplies for students in select Jackson Public Schools, as well as students affiliated with the Children’s Justice Center.
- Operation Shoestring Summer Reading Program (July)
Provisional members will help students in Project KIDS Summer Program develop and maintain their reading skills. They will purchase books on the Jackson Public Schools summer reading list and facilitate reading of the books as well as assisting students with their required summer reading project.
- REACH Day (June-December)
Provisional members will interact and play with children and their siblings visiting the Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital. They will provide arts and crafts; as well as plan, purchase supplies, and execute four different holiday parties throughout the year.
- HeARTworks (June-December)
Provisional members will work with the clients of Stewpot to create works of art. They will provide a welcoming creative space while distributing art supplies and snacks. Volunteers will introduce participants to new materials and project ideas.
- Jackson Zoo Guides (May-June)
The Jackson Zoo is a living classroom that serves up to 200,000 visitors a year. Our provisional members serve as educational guides for various animal exhibits during weekends in the month of June and for “Dream Night,” an evening event when the zoo is open to people with special needs.
- Feed a Family (June-July, September, January)
Feed a Family volunteers provide meals and support to families who stay at Ronald McDonald House while their children receive intensive care at metro-area medical facilities. These families often spend the entire day at the hospital with their children and can count on the Junior League of Jackson volunteers to have dinner waiting when they return to the Ronald McDonald House.
- One Jackson, Many Readers (May, September)
By partnering with the Mississippi Children’s Museum, provisional members will focus on early literacy of under-served JPS students. Volunteers will plan a literacy training for students (K-12) and parents participating in One Jackson, Many Readers as well as provide support for a celebratory event honoring JPS students reaching summer reading targets. The literacy training will be held at the Mississippi Children’s Museum Education Center to kick off the students’ summer reading program.
- Turning Pages (September – December)
Turning Pages volunteers will join an established tutoring program at Calvary Baptist Church to read with elementary age children or lead them in enrichment activities after they completed their tutoring for the evening. Volunteers will also provide books and educational supplies to the tutoring program, along with serving as mentors to the children
- Fit Kid Fest (Fall 2016)
JLJ Volunteers would plan and host an etiquette and nutrition class for the children of Calvary Baptist Church. The event would be hosted on a Saturday morning in the fall
