On behalf of the Junior League of Jackson, thank you for visiting our website! Here you will find very specific information about how the Junior League of Jackson promotes voluntarism, develops the potential of women and improves communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
This is an exciting year for the Junior League of Jackson as we celebrate our 70th anniversary! Isaac Newton said, “If I have seen further than others it is because I am standing on the shoulders of giants.” That is a true picture of how the Junior League of Jackson stands today. From our League’s beginning, members have made bold decisions and we have been challenged to follow suit. From early legislative advocacy to the Children’s Cancer clinic, to bringing hope to Jackson’s Westpark community, League members have stepped out with bold action in response to need.
We continue to take these steps to brighten the future of Mississippi’s children. We will take one of our boldest steps yet in December 2010 as the Mississippi Children’s Museum, the Junior League of Jackson’s second signature project, opens. The Museum doors will open both literally and figuratively, giving all children in Mississippi an opportunity to think bigger and brighter. What a way to mark this anniversary year!
This year, in addition to our 34 community projects in the areas of Arts & Education, Health Services, and Social Services, we have an exciting event for all JLJ members – Provisionals, Actives, and Sustaining Members alike – as we join together to celebrate our history through service. During the week of February 8, 2011 we will participate together in a series of community projects. We will touch each community partner from our history with simple but significant acts, giving us all a wonderful opportunity to serve and celebrate together!
Another exciting happening this year is the relaunch of our children’s book, “The Year of the Stars.” This wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated book is a must have for any child’s bookshelf.
Finally, we invite you to attend Mistletoe Marketplace 2010 on November 3-6, 2010 at the Mississippi Trademart. Celebrating its 30th year, this shopping extravaganza is the largest of its kind in the Southeast! Come experience the tradition that showcases more than 160 merchants and attracts over 35,000 shoppers. The long term success of this event has allowed the Junior League of Jackson to return over $12 million back to the community.
The Junior League of Jackson has been making positive change in the greater Jackson community for 70 years. Throughout our 70 year history, many dramatic changes have occurred in the roles and responsibilities of women; but voluntarism has remained the center of our mission. Through their training and service, women are uniquely prepared to lead in nonprofit agencies, businesses and other volunteer organizations. Today, more than 900 Active and Provisional members and 1,200 Sustaining members maintain our strong legacy as we continue to make positive change in our greater Jackson community.
Continual positive impact such as this can only come from women with a variety of backgrounds with unique life experiences who have great concern for and interest in our community. In addition to our dedicated members, the Junior League of Jackson is supported by many groups of generous patrons, community partners, corporations and advisory groups who help us build our community year after year by identifying need and supporting our mission.
Dean Acheson said “Always remember that the future comes one day at a time.” I am proud to be a part of the next day and next year in the Junior League of Jackson. Enjoy our website!
