Message from the President
Welcome to the Junior League of Jackson! On behalf of our more than 2,400 members, I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our work to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Through our members’ commitment to community projects and to our fund development businesses, this year the League will donate more than 40,000 volunteer hours and more than $1 million in direct financial support to community projects in metro Jackson.
As one of Mississippi’s largest non-profit volunteer organizations, and the seventh-largest Junior League in the world, we touch the lives of countless children and young people through our community projects. The best-known may be our signature projects, the Children’s Cancer Clinic at Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children and the Mississippi Children’s Museum. But we are also proud to partner with dozens of other organizations for projects large and small. Over 900 Active and Provisional members work in more than 30 community projects, centered on early literacy, teen pregnancy prevention, nutrition, physical activity, and social/emotional wellness. Explore the rich variety of these projects and partnerships on our “In the Community” page. If you are interested in proposing a project that can put our volunteers and funds to work, we’d love to hear from you!
Our projects rely on the commitment of our partners and our members (including more than 1,500 Sustaining members, who continue to give time and dollars to the League and who lead dozens of other community organizations). Financial support for our projects comes from our volunteer-operated fund development businesses, including Bargain Boutique (an upscale resale shop in Colonial Mart shopping center) and JLJ Publications (author of our celebrated children’s book, The Year of the Stars, and host of our new Books and Authors series). Look out for more information on our newest fund development/community project, coming in spring 2014. It will give our area’s kids an up-close-and-personal chance to explore, touch and learn about emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and trucks of all types. And we invite you to join us at Mistletoe Marketplace (our largest fund development business and the South’s premier holiday shopping experience).
The Junior League of Jackson is among the most effective agents for positive change in our community. And while that community improvement is at the heart of our mission, no less important are the training, skills and knowledge that every member gains as a part of this organization. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this group of amazing women this year, and I hope that if you’re interested in being a part of what the Junior League does – whether as a member, a project partner, a corporate sponsor or a friend – you’ll get in touch. Thank you for visiting www.jljackson.org; please let us hear from you!
All the best,
Margaret Oertling Cupples, 2013-2014 President
