The 2010-2011 Provisional Class of the Junior League of Jackson is comprised of dynamic and talented women who are committed to making a positive impact on our community. This summer and fall, these women will teach students healthy eating habits, remodel rooms, organize a Grandparent’s Day, equip students with school supplies, and teach children through visual and performing arts programs. They will create an after school learning lab, design a training center for first time home owners, and help with final preparations for the opening of JLJ’s Signature Project, the MS Children’s Museum. The dedication and excitement that these ladies have demonstrated ensures a healthy and vibrant future for the Junior League of Jackson.
Habitat Home (June) Provisional and Active members team up to make the dream of home ownership a reality for a deserving family by building a new home.
Arts Explosion Camp (June) Provisional members head back to summer camp by partnering with Calvary Baptist Church to provide a weeklong summer arts camp for local elementary school children. Children will be introduced to various art forms that include karate, gymnastics, ballet and visual arts.
Stewpot’s Lunch-n-Learn for Children (June) Provisional members serve up fun lunches for children participating in Stewpot’s summer program while teaching them about the importance of healthy eating and exercise.
Methodist Children’s Home Fun Day (June) Provisional volunteers have a day of fun-filled activities planned for the children in all of the Methodist Children’s Home group homes and foster families.
Stewpot’s Lunch-n-Learn for Teens (July) Provisional members offer teen participants in Stewpot’s Summer Program healthy lunches and lessons on the dos and don’ts of fine dining.
Operation Shoestring Summer Reading Program (June-July) Being a proficient reader is one the most important life skills that a child needs! In this project, Provisional members help 3rd -5th grade students in the Project KIDS Summer Program develop and maintain their reading skills. Using books from the Jackson Public Schools summer reading list, Provisional members coach students in reading and assist with completion of the required summer reading project.
UMC Preemie Reunion (August) Provisional members partner with University of Mississippi Medical Center staff and faculty to organize a celebration reunion for patients who spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit over the past several years.
Grandparent’s Day (September) Provisional volunteers partner with the MS Alzheimer’s Association to plan and implement a Grandparent’s Day Festival designed to promote awareness of Alzheimer’s, wellness and togetherness. This family celebration of grandparents includes fun activities that support healthy eating, exercise, learning and making lasting memories.
Junior League of Jackson Homeowner Training Center (June-October) In this project, Provisional members create a training center that communicates the mission of Habitat for Humanity and conveys the joy families have when entering their new homes. Named for the Junior League of Jackson, the center will be a functional space where Habitat staff members can meet with families, present important information and conduct critical seminars while inspiring families to achieve their dream of home ownership.
Backpack Buddies (June-July) Provisional members get ready to kick off a successful new school year by filling backpacks with school supplies for students in selected Jackson Public Schools.
Doodle B.U.G.S. -- Building Up Great Students (June-July) Volunteers pair up with the Doodleville Community Development Center to create a fun and functional After School Learning Center stocked with school supplies for the upcoming year.
McRae Home Makeover (June-July) Provisionals transform the McRae Home for teen girls with a special makeover for the home’s common areas.
Doin’ Up the Driveway (June-August) In preparation for the opening of the Mississippi Children’s Museum, Provisional members create an inviting driveway for the entrance to the museum with plants, banners and signage.
Deckin’ Out the Deck (September–October) Provisionals deck out the exterior of the Museum Clubhouse with landscaping and decorations in preparation for the opening of the Mississippi Children’s Museum.
Landscaping to Brighten Lives (October) Provisional members beautify Hope House, a home away from home, for out of town patients and their families who are receiving out-patient treatments from local hospitals. Volunteers improve the landscaping around the home creating a welcoming and relaxing environment for guests of Hope House.
