Essential Needs Projects
The Junior League of Jackson’s Essential Needs projects provide access to essential needs, ensuring basic physiological requirements are met so students are better equipped to succeed in the classroom. Through hands-on service and strategic partnerships with organizations such as Jackson Public Schools and the Mississippi Food Network, League volunteers provide critical support where it’s needed most. Programs like Jackson Backpack and the School Pantry Program ensure that students have access to nutritious meals and personal care items throughout the school year, while Helping Hands offers flexible volunteer support to community partners across a wide range of needs and events. These efforts reflect the League’s ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for families by ensuring their most fundamental needs are met with compassion and consistency.
Jackson Backpack (Mississippi Food Network/Jackson Public Schools)
Jackson Backpack volunteers provide approximately 200 students at a JPS Elementary School with a backpack meal kit filled with nutritious food to take home each weekend during the school year. Volunteers pack backpacks on Friday mornings and deliver them to the schools.
IBC CityDance: Nurturing Healthy Habits & Reading Literacy
This new project aims to support both the student in the classroom and the student’s siblings. League volunteers will set up and staff a reading room for siblings to spend time during class. By offering a clean, quiet space for siblings of CityDance students to work with League volunteers in reading groups or to read with their caregivers, we can help families strengthen their bonds while supporting academic development outside the traditional school setting.
School Pantry Program (Mississippi Food Network/Jackson Public Schools)
Pantry volunteers stock the school pantry at a JPS Elementary School with fresh produce, staple foods, and personal care items each month. Volunteers also host distribution events at the school pantry throughout the school year.
Junior League GIVES (Various Partners)
Volunteers collect and distribute new and gently used items and quality goods to meet the needs of current and new community partners.
